Fitness Detour: Plateaus

You and your body can be adversaries when weight loss is the goal. The body yearns to maintain homeostasis, a state when balance has been achieved. So when we exercise the body does make changes (i.e.  weight loss, body fat reduction, muscular endurance, strength, etc.) to successfully accomplish the exercise routines you embark upon.

However, when you continue with the same workout style and strategy the body’s propensity to change starts to diminish. Why, because the body has already adapted to the stress applied and increased intensity must be utilized. In other words, you must vary your routine.

Varying the routine in the weight room can range from something as minimal as increasing your rep strategy from 10 to 15, reducing your rest time or even changing your exercises so that they focus more on balance and coordination as opposed to strength. Varying your cardio program can follow a similar course and can also entail changing your machine and method.

The key is to resist the urge to become frustrated when progress starts to slow down. Instead, regroup and ask yourself if you are still feeling challenged with your workout. If the challenge is missing then try the following steps to break through your plateau:

1. Check out fitness websites for creative fitness routines.

2. Modify your cardio routine to include a combination of interval training and steady pace training.

3. Try a fitness class or training style (i.e. sculpting, yoga, pilates, dance, martial arts) that you haven’t done before.

4. Try a sample session with a personal trainer to discuss your goals and obtain ideas about how you can revamp your fitness routine.

5. Ask questions!
