Fitness Detour: Patience

Ever since I was a kid I have always noticed that it is easier to make a mess than clean it up. The same can be said with our body. We can spend a week or two (or three) splurging on cakes, pies, fries or whatever delightful indulgence you have in mind. We then gain weight, increase our clothing size and feel a little more sluggish than normal.

The next step is to lose the excess weight by exercising and eating right, but the frustration starts to set in as we find it a lot harder to take off those pounds. This frustration is exacerbated by the numerous commercials and advertisements for miraculous weight loss products that promise results in “just a few short weeks” or “your money back”. As the frustration mounts some of us throw in the towel, sabotaging our weight loss efforts.

Patience is key, when your goal is to lose weight and keep it off. Research has shown that healthy weight loss progresses at a rate of 1 to 2 pounds a week. As the scale makes a slow crawl down in pounds you should also consider your changes in inches and body fat (are your clothes a little looser than before, are you starting to tighten your belt buckle) as indicators of progress.

Remember that in life there is no quick fix, all the best things are worth the wait. To help reduce your anxiety start setting realistic goals:

1. To lose a pound or two a week.
2. To have a consistent workout schedule.
3. To eat healthy at least 5 days out of the week.
4. To take the stairs.
5. To get active on the weekends.
