To stand still. To stop development, growth, progression or advancement. To cease to run or flow. These are all definitions of stagnation.
When we are stagnant we are in a place that may be comfortable and familiar but this place will only sabotage our efforts toward reaching our fitness goals. To change our bodies we must tackle new challenges, new levels of exertion and new strategies of movement.
As we venture into new areas of physical challenge our body is forced to change. It is forced to get stronger, become more efficient and reach peak levels of health and fitness because it must. It must change so that it can endure these new physical challenges.
This seems like a simple concept but quite a few of us struggle with this weight loss sabotage. As adults it is often difficult to put ourselves in situations where we don’t feel in control, situations where we may feel awkward and out of our element. This is our ego getting in the way.
Don’t let your ego cause you to succumb to stagnation! Try these steps to keep moving in a positive fitness direction.
1. Connect with your inner child! When we were children everything was a new experience and we looked forward to enjoying each experience. Try to reconnect with this attitude (and keep in mind that it is okay to feel awkward because with mastery comes change).
2. Drop the ego at the door! You are an expert in your chosen career, if you are not a fitness professional listen and learn. You can always learn something new from professionals that have dedicated years to learning how to change the body!
3. Get out of your element! If you’ve been doing the same fitness routine for the past 3 years and still wondering why your body hasn’t changed then you should definitely explore a new exercise strategy. The body responds when you provide it with a new challenge. Try something totally different than what you’re accustomed to and watch how your body starts to change. Trust me!
